The Craft and Its Symbols: Opening the Door to Masonic Symbolism
Author:  Brother Allen E. Roberts, 33o (1917 - 1997)
Copyright: 1974

This 90-page Masonic classic provides a nice overview of Blue Lodge symbols and their meanings with respect to the rituals of the three degrees and to the everyday lives of Masons.   It is divided into three sections, one for each of the degrees, and does a nice job of describing the role of each in the spiritual and character development of Masons.   The book also includes many detailed illustrations of symbols and art depicting Masonic themes.

A beneficial feature of this book is that Brother Roberts emphasizes the way each individual experiences Masonic teachings in his own way, showing that while the symbols and lessons seek to provide knowledge of important truths, how they become incorporated into everyday life is a matter of individual choice and development.  His approach also emphasizes the important aspect that Brotherhood plays in character building, the life of the Lodge, and the perpetuation of Freemasonry.
Brother Roberts is a distinguished Masonic scholar and author of over 20 other books including The Mystic Tie, Freemasonry in American History, Brother Truman: The Masonic Life and Philosophy of Harry Truman, and G. Washington: Master Mason.
